Greenbrier, Great Bridge, Las Gaviotas and the older streets off Battlefield Boulevard sit under loblolly pines and oaks that drop a yellow-green pollen from March into May that coats every pane, screen and sill in the city, then tannin after every rain for the rest of the year, and the shade keeps north-facing glass damp enough for mildew in the shoulder seasons. The Great Dismal Swamp to the west keeps the humidity up all summer.
The water is the second problem. Nearly every community out here was built around lakes and ponds, and the homes on the water in Greenbrier, Edinburgh, Cahoon Plantation and Culpepper Landing keep a gray film on the back glass most of the year. The irrigation leaves a hard mineral line along the lower panes, the lots still being built in Hickory and off Hillcrest Parkway keep a layer of construction dust on the sliders and screens for a year after the home is finished, and in winter the road salt and brine spray off Battlefield Boulevard and Greenbrier Parkway add a gray film to everything near the street.
